Being a light to the world doesn’t necessarily mean it’s comfortable for the world to be near us.
The light reveals darkness, which can bring about conviction, shame, embarrassment, and generally uncomfortable feelings to those comfortable in the dark.
Some will have their eyes open, while others aim to flee the discomfort as soon as possible.
Because light and dark don’t mix.
That’s why there’s so much animosity between believers and non-believers. Sometimes a believer doesn’t even have to say anything.
All they need is to be in the same room as someone who knows them. The light, revealed by the Holy Spirit, simply being in the room, unveils some of the darkness in that person, for that person.
So when Jesus says to be a light, he’s not saying that everyone’s going to flock to it and love it. The light exposes sin and reveals Truth.
It brings freedom for those who want it and defensiveness or withdrawal for those who don’t.
For those who don’t, they reject it. They are either hostile to it because of the shame it uncovers, or the conscience is so seared that they can’t even see what the light exposes.
